Agricultural research should promote the production of safe, quality and standard agro commodities that meet specific or target markets. Where majority of the produce are highly perishable with little or no storage facilities, deterioration and contamination abound, leading to post harvest losses and financial losses as well. Research emphasis should be on reducing post harvest losses through appropriate preservation, storage, modified packaging, processing into stable products. The much desired gains will be realized if demand driven agricultural research are tailored to ameliorate the challenges faced by actors in the sector from farm to fork. In view of the tropical nature of the continent coupled with poor generation of electricity in some parts, alternative power supply such as the solar should be utilized to provide cold chain facilities for storage of fresh produce. Commodity based research institutes located within regions where such commodities are produced should provide technical support from the farm to the consumption (fork) level to farmers/processors especially women that may be disadvantaged.
